Becoming a Guardian ad Litem is easy. Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and no special education or experience is required. There are a few qualifications for becoming a Guardian ad Litem such as:

  • The volunteer must have a sincere desire to make the difference in the life of a child by advocating for a safe, permanent home for the child.
  • The volunteer must be able to pass a criminal background check.
  • The volunteer must be of sound character with good verbal and written skills.
  • The volunteer must be objective and non-judgmental and be able to interact with people of various educational, economic and ethnic backgrounds.

 

Application Process

The application process requires a written application, three personal/professional references, and a criminal records check. A staff member will also conduct a personal interview. Once the application is complete the volunteer will be asked to complete 25-30 hours of training before being sworn in by a district court Judge and being assigned a case.
